Air Vents FAQ - Flo-Matrix HVAC

This section covers basic information about air vents selections and characteristics that would assist you to select the proper product for your projects. For a more in-depth learning experience, please head to our Insights corner.

Do you make custom air grilles, register, & diffusers (GRD)

  • Absolutely. We specialize in customizing our standard GRD products to your exact specifications, working directly from your provided drawings. For larger projects, we also offer dedicated product development services to ensure a perfect fit for your needs.

Do you offer performance data for your products?

  • Yes. Most of our standard performance data is available on our individual product pages. If you need additional information, please contact us directly. All our data is tested and collected in compliance with industry standards, primarily ASHRAE Standard 70 "Method of Testing the Performance of Air Outlets and Air Inlets (ANSI approved)”or ADC1062R4 (ADC1062:GRD-84).

Do you offer plenums for your products?

  • Yes, we do. Our plenums are typically custom-made to ensure a perfect fit for your specific application. They are constructed to meet material specifications from key industry standards, including the following:
Canada & US
Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association
SMACNA –– HVAC Duct Construction Standards

UK & EU
The Building Engineering Services Association
BESA” – DW/144 Spec for Sheet Metal Ductwork

Please contact our team with your project details, and we can provide a solution that meets your requirements.

How do I choose air grilles, register, & diffusers (GRD)? Are there any product performance attributes?

While aesthetics are often the initial factor, HVAC professionals focus on several critical performance attributes to ensure comfort, efficiency, and functionality. The most important ones to consider are:

Air Flow Rate (L/s or CFM) The amount of air flow in reference to time
Static Pressure (Pa or In.Wg) The amount of air pressure build up in the plenum
Throw (m or ft) The distance/range that air pattern would cover in an area
Acoustic Level (NC or dBA) Noise level generated by the vent w.r.t. the air flow rate

         For Example:

Performance Data
It is important to note that relying solely on the rated CFM of a vent can be misleading. If the static pressure on your project site is lower than the manufacturer's testing parameters, the actual airflow will be lower than rated. This results in an underperforming and less efficient HVAC system.

My air vent is noisy or whistling, why is that?

The most common cause of a whistling vent is restricted airflow. Think of it like blowing a whistle: a high-velocity stream of air forced through a small opening creates noise. If your vent's opening is too small for the system's airflow (CFM), it will produce a similar whistling sound.

Without altering your HVAC settings, the most effective solution is to replace the vent with a larger, more appropriately sized model. We strongly recommend consulting an HVAC professional to diagnose the issue and select the right product for your system.

Another potential cause is the vent's construction. Products made from thinner, less rigid materials are more prone to vibration and noise transmission, which can also lead to rattling or buzzing sounds.

Do you make Plenum Reducers (transform fittings)?

Yes, we absolutely do. We manufacture custom plenum reducers and a full range of transformer fittings to meet your project's specific requirements. For optimal performance and ease of installation, we recommend providing the exact dimensions and specifications for your plenum when you place your order.
